Single Mom Moments
My Mom Moments...
I would like to give thanks to all the blessings in my life and most of all to the one who gives me life.... my son.
I was not always a single mom but since my son was 19 months the moments are plenty.
Its the little things you realize when you are parenting alone.
You are the only one who stays up all night with a sick baby, the only one who holds your breath as you try to let your baby cry it out to fall asleep, the only one who prays they have the strength to make it through the first of many time outs. My moments of privacy only happen when he is asleep but you learn to savor and appreciate all the time you have. You are also the one your child calls to, reaches for and gives unconditional love to in so many ways. My little life with my little man is filled with LOTS of love.
There are so many single mom's with much more than just one child with little to no help and it is the undeniable strength they have that remind me I am so truly blessed and fortunate.
Every parent has challenges they face and my intention for this post is to remind us all that no matter what the circumstance may be "be great full" for those who call us "Mom".
In that I would also like to remind my mom who just happened to be the "single mom" who raised me and my two sisters and always made us feel loved. Thank you Mom.
Much Love

Spartan Kids!
Just recently I completed my second spartan sprint race in Barry. It was so much fun. Even better to watch my super brave God Son Ethan only 11 years old also complete the kids 1 km obstacle race. I am so proud and pumped of how amazing it he did! way to go Ethan you Rock!
This just inspires me to push even harder to really get the message across that fitness really has to be a big priority in our children's lives.
This fall I am hoping to Launch CORE KIDS FITNESS in elementary schools across the GTA.
Lets make every moment count!
sincerely "Coach Shanon"

Time Spent
Core Kids Fitness for those of you who do not know, began as an opportunity for myself to play a key role in ensuring my son was able to benefit from a structured physical fitness program from the time he was 2 years old.
Personally having grown up in a time where you could just go outside to play without much supervision if any at all know now this is not the case for our young children of today.
Now more than ever fitness programs are not just for adults. While as adults we are always doing what we can to stay active & healthy and now taking stock in how our children are too!
When fitness professionals talk about "making fitness & nutrition a lifestyle choice" it really is true just remember it truly only sticks if the entire family is on board.
I encourage all parents to begin with one week of tracking your family's fitness time versus screen time!
"Screen Time" includes computer work or play, video games and TV or movies.
The goal is that our children do not spend more than 2 maximum hours per day. To compare also track your time spent on fitness or active play including going for a walk, exercise, gym (if any at school), structured fitness / sports programs you may be in per week.
It is always best to know where your starting point is before setting some realalistic goals for your entire family!

CORE KIDS BIRTHDAY PARTIES!
Hi Everyone,
Planning your child's birthday party can be most exciting for all you "party mamma's" or very stressfull for others. Either way we all want our children's birthdays to create an amazing memory with some form of family tradition.
It doesn't have to break the bank your back and house all in one fell swoop.
Especially when your children are in the age range of 3-6year alot of parents come with and stay for the party, this can add alot of bodies to feed and acomodate. It is good to keep the focus on the children and know the parents understand this.
Tips:
1. Rent space out a community center or an all in one facility
2. Food - keep it simple healthy with the big treat being the cake, less energy highs & lows
3. Loot bags - sometimes one cool toy is easier than arranging an entire bag of goodies for example: bubble wands, skipping ropes, hoola hoops or fun dress up hats
4. Time - keep to a schedule allow 15 minutes prior to starting your activity for late comers, 60 minutes of the activity of your choice followed by 30 minutes for snacks and cake then 15 minutes for gift opening or one more activity such as a scavenger hunt before they go home (2 hours is the perfect length)
5. Don't be against hiring one of your regualar teenage babysitters to assist with feeding the children, clearing and cleaning up) It is worth it.
CORE KIDS BIRTHDAYS
We bring super fun equipment to where the party is located to provide 60 minute Fun Fit Party combining gymnastics, yoga, music, movement & fitness all in one!
$90 + HST for one hour

Why Stretch?
Why Stretch?
* Cyclists have shortened hip flexors (the muscles in the area where the thigh meets the torso that bend and raise the knee) and often tight necks.
* Jujitsu fighters have short hip flexors plus contracted abdominals.
* Kick boxers develop contractions in the muscles at the side of the buttocks, as well as lower-back pain.
* Tennis players are vulnerable to tennis elbow, shoulder injuries, and lower- back pain.
* Contact sports (e.g., wrestling, football, hockey, and basketball) are particularly destructive. They cause bruising when players crash into each other and cause overstretch injuries when they react to each other’s moves. Wrestlers who lift and throw opponents torque their backs and wind up with back pain.
We all have tight muscles from time to time... but did you know about Facia?
What is FASCIA
Fascia is a part of the connective tissue system to which relatively little attention has been given in the past.
Fascia is a part of the connective tissue system to which relatively little attention has been given in the past.
Whenever there’s an injury, the fascia adheres to itself and to other soft tissues, and administering a sudden twist can cause all these tissues to tear. But in order to make the kind of changes in the body structure that can really heal an injury, the fascia must be actively stretched.
There are tremendous benefits of fully functioning fascia for both performance and injury prevention. The fascia unites all the structures of the body. It’s the one tissue that touches every single organ, nerve, joint, and blood vessel. That’s why whatever your problem is—arthritis, worn cartilage in your knee, stiff neck—stretching the fascia helps. The fact that the fascia connects all the parts of the body explains why the stretches often focus on an area far from where you feel pain.remember: no matter what injury your sport may cause, stretching and massage can prevent or fix it.
Myofascial release treatments is a whole body approach to treatment. A good example is the chronic low back pain client; although the low back is the primary area of injury, the client may also have significant discomfort in the neck. This is due to the gradual tightening of the muscles and especially of the fascia as the tightness creeps its way up the back, eventually creating neck and head pain. Experience shows that optimal resolution of the low back pain requires release of the fascia of both the head and neck. If the neck tightness is not also released, it will continue to apply a downward drag until fascial restriction and pain returns to the low back.
Muscle provides the greatest bulk of our body's soft tissue. Because all muscle is enveloped by and ingrained with fascia, myofascial release is the term that has been given to the techniques that are used to relieve soft tissue from the abnormal grip of tight fascia.
The collagenous fibers of fascia are extremely tough and resistant to stretch. In fact, it is estimated that fascia has a tensile strength of as much as 2000 pounds per square inch. No wonder it causes pain when it tightens!
Thai Stretch Massage can help and this awesome treatment will leave you feeling
longer and taller than ever!
Be well and stretch every day:)

MILA for Kids!
Now that summer is almost over and the new school year right around the corner I am looking forward to getting back on a regular schedule for me and my son!
Gone will be the late summer nights, trips to the icescream shop and saying okay to "just one more treat" to your kids.
I would like to share with you the benefits of MILA for your kids. We all know how important Omega 3's are for brain development but getting your kids to take fish oil is less than easy. Mila is a plant based Omega 3 with does convert to EPA/ DHA. The fact is anyone can buy chia seeds but Mila's strain of chia has been proven well above the norm for fiber, selenium, zinc and other antioxidants as well as iron.
Personally my son has very low iron where his body does not have to ability to retain any iron he intakes through diet so he has to take a supplement daily. The down side is iron supplements are very constipating and that can be very unconfrontable for his little tummy. MILA has been his saving grace keeping his digestive tract in true form even with the supplement of iron. I have also found he is sleeping better and less highs and lows throughout his day.
Please feel free to contact me if you have any questions about MILA and would like to try some with your family!
Be well & live well,
Shanon http://shanonmcmillan.lifemax.net/

I love my job!
Hi everyone,
I just had to write as I had an offered my Core Kids Trial session at a local Montessori this week.
I usually see approximately 20 kids when I teach but to my surprise I had 32 fantastic little smiles watching, listening, singing and moving with me for almost 40 minutes.
To many considering the age range was from as young as 2 to 4 year olds you might think it would be difficult. But it was so much fun!
In the end it just reminds me that I can not give up on my business plan to bring fitness and fun to as many schools and day cares as I can.
Watching my own son learn new skills like "tree pose" or holding his "sticky bug handstand" against the wall by himself and how proud he is afterward is as rewarding as watching him learn to write his name.
I suppose my point is there is success to be had in all aspects of our children's lives educational and PHYSICAL.
When I say "I love my job" the most important one I have is being able to give my son the opportunity to learn and experience as many things as I can. As parents we all have special gifts our children! No re gifting here LOL...
Enjoy the ride of parenthood!

CORE KIDS FIT TIPS
Backyard Trampoline Safety FYI: Studies show the majority of injuries (70%) happen on the bed and (30%) as
a result from falls off the bed. Injury Prevention: 1. Avoid KNEE DROPS, this skill has common injuries to the lower back and neck because children arch their back and don’t remember to engage their core. Suggest Doggie Drops on their hands and knees without allowing their backs to sway. 2. “Bum Drops” are very popular, be sure they use both hands one on either side of their hips and their fingers face their toes. Note: When their fingers turn away from their body there is a great risk to hyperextending their elbows. 3. TWO FOOT RULE, always have your children bounce with two feet, better for balance and less likely to roll an ankle or injure their knees. 4. Only allow one person on the trampoline at one time. BOUNCE SMART & HAVE FUN!
FAMILY FITNESS
Exercises for Mom & Dad Too!
Plank - Begin on your stomach, hands under your shoulders push up until
you are in a full straight body position. Pretend you are holding a marble in
your belly button as to not sway your lower back. Use an egg timer or a
watch and see who can hold the position the longest! Great for your core,
lower back and shoulders. (may modify from forearms)
Rock ‘n’ Roll - Begin sitting on the floor with your knees tucked into your
chest, hands hold your shins and place a small stuffed animal under your
chin so that you don’t hit your head as you roll back. Once your start
position is ready lift your feet off the floor and roll onto your back then up
again. The true test is if you can accomplish this without letting go of your
shins. Try to rock ‘n’ roll 10 times. Great for your core and a good massage
for your spine. *Always be sure to check with your care giver before beginning any new exercise program.
Stretch Every Day!
All children have trouble with muscle shortening, especially during rapid bone growth combined with activity during their day. Some children may have night cramps and leg aches caused by muscle fatigue and tightness, which is often incorrectly attributed to “growing pains”. Children should be taught at a young age how to stretch properly. This will ensure that they develop good training habits and maintain healthy muscles for the rest of their lives. Our anatomy is the same at any age and it is best to stretch all major muscle groups daily. As a family watching your favorite show sit on the floor and take the time, touch your toes, seal stretch, arm circles, butterfly and mountain stretch ... it doesn’t take long.

MONKEY BAR SAFETY! For our little monkeys, when your children are swinging on the bars be sure they land or jump off from their back swing so that if they were to fall their hands are in front of them to properly break the fall with less chance of injury.
Peek-A-BOO Pull Ups This is a great exercise when on the monkey bars. Be sure one adult is behind the child holding under their arms as you assist them to pull their chin above the bar and another adult in front to say “Peek-A- Boo!”, before you know they will be pulling up on their own.
Balance and Strength
Balance & Strength, yes this is something we all strive for and even our children need to work at this too. They are so much stronger than we give them credit for. The benefits to conditioning our children with proper balance and strength exercises really assists in prevention of pore postural issues as they grow and look how much fun it can be too!
These are are just some of the fun moves I challenge my CORE KIDS with in a regular fitness program at local schools and day cares.
Have fun, try timing you and your kids at how long you can stand on one foot and notice how one side is easier than the other...hmmm something to work on.

Kids Yoga
Yoga is a form of exercise, meditation, and breathing practices. Designed to bring unity to the mind, body, and spirit. Adults have vouched for yoga for years, saying it makes them feel better physically, enhances their ability to concentrate, and brings tranquility to their lives. Now parents and yoga instructors are looking at the possible benefits of yoga for kids.
First, remember that old saying “the apple doesn’t fall far from the tree” well it is so true in my experience as a parent and a fitness professional I know when I have a BUSY week my son experiences my exhaustion as well. Children experience many of the same physical benefits adults do from practicing yoga and regular exercise.
Specifically to yoga it strengthens them and helps them become more flexible and coordinated, enhances self-awareness, body awareness and self confidence in learning new skills. As part of the practice of yoga, kids need to slow down much like we all need to from time to time. Learning to hold certain postures, breathe and patience is key to more than just yoga.
I personally have a very strong belief that through practicing yoga, children can learn ways to relax and get control of stress in their lives. For instance I have made it my son’s and I’s bedtime routine to practice breathing techniques of yoga to help calm his mind and body before drifting off to sleep each night.
I also use this same deep breathing technique when he is frustrated, anxious or just having a typical “3 year old moment” when as a parent, in my opinion staying calm and understanding is the best treatment.
Sincerely Shanon or as the kids call me "Miss Shanon"
